As pointed out by james_nicoll and others, Ray Harryhausen has died.

His work inspired generations, and was a true bit of magic that Hollywood was transformed by.

I've written about his work before, especially in my blog entry on The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.

Farewell, Mr. Harryhausen; you leave a greater legacy than most will ever know.

... from Phoenix Rising. The first deleted chapter is up. We deleted several chapters during editing to speed up the flow, but it did lose some background and detail that I was kinda sad to see go. I wouldn't add it back in -- the decision to remove these chapters was, I think, correct -- but they were decent chapters by themselves and worth a look.
