Thirty Days of Anime, Day 3: Your Anime Crush

I missed Sunday's post so I'll have to do both #3 and 4 today!

I actually don't agree with arcadiagt5 's take on this; yes, on the one hand anime characters are just celluloid (or pixels). They're not real people. But on the other, we fall in love with our image of people in real life. Yes, one HOPES that the image that we fall in love with, and marry, in real life is a more detailed, nuanced, complex one, and certainly there are aspects of Real Life that no drawn (or written, in the case of novels, or acted, as in film and TV series with live-action) character can hope to equal.

But at the same time when we recall such people, when we envision them in our minds, the THOUGHTS of these people are just as much real THOUGHTS as any others. Moreover, when we're watching a fictional person, we can interpret their personality through the lens of our own beliefs and impute to that fictional character traits that may, or may not, be part of the "real" version (the one the writer and/or actors intend for us to see), but that becomes the truth of the character for us. This is, of course, why some people can become obsessed with a fictional character and, if they aren't completely balanced, come to see the actor as the character. The feelings for the constructed version of the character, therefore, can be quite real indeed.

And "crush" is of course not love -- more fascination with attraction. So I don't quite have the same "ridiculous!" reaction.

In my case, it's not quite as easy as some might think to decide which one is THE anime crush for me.

There are many attractive, competent, and interesting characters in anime that I have watched, and many of them, if I were to meet them in real life, I would find very attractive. However, despite multiple choices, there are really two that have to stand out, one utterly obvious to many, another... perhaps only obvious to a certain audience.

1) Belldandy-sama, Ah! Megamisama/Ah/Oh My Goddess!: "Well DUH! She's a GODDESS!"   Yes. Yes she is. Beautiful, kind, wise in her own way (NOT a "doormat", at least not as I read her), capable of total commitment, and -- of course -- with vast magical powers. Bell-chan is just a very NICE person, with her exterior beauty simply echoing the same internal beauty.
However, I realized some time ago that there was another very good reason why I reacted so positively to her the first time I saw her (in an anime of a type that I am not generally fascinated with), and why I felt that in some way she was FAMILIAR. She is in many ways, especially in something of the essence of her creator's drawing style, similar to Polychrome, Daughter of the Rainbow, who *was* my first crush.
Note that for the link I chose the Ah! Megamisama! movie. This is a marvelous movie but to appreciate it you need to have seen the original OVA series; however, I'm not sure which of the multiplicity of entries on the show is the actual OVA series; I think the TV series is weaker, especially at the beginning.

2) Andromeda Shun, Saint Seiya: I am far from the first man to make the mistake of thinking Andromeda Shun is a girl. One of our friends collected numerous images of the "beautiful green-haired girl" before being gently corrected as to his mistaken impression. But my "crush" on Shun came from the interaction in the RPG which sculpted Shun (Gruenwald) Kido into someone almost as real as people I've met in real life, at least to me. The only real way to explain it is to remember back to the "first anime" post and recognize that in the fanfic written from Saint Seiya, the character Windlash was a direct self-insert/Mary Sue. (Based on a Villains and Vigilantes character; in that RPG, you started with yourself as a base and then created the character).
Is that a "fair" crush entry? I don't know. Certainly it's not based JUST on the anime, but on what we derived from the anime. On the other hand, the character was constructed using everything we could find on the series back then (in the very early 90s).
