Thirty Days of Anime -- Day 17: Best Background Music

And I have catching up to do again!

Well, once more we go from a subject that I didn't even have to think twice about to one where the choice is verging on damn-all impossible. There's SO many shows that had amazing BGM work in them. Some had individual pieces that are such Crowning Music of Awesome that their sole and singular presence is enough to make me want to choose that anime JUST for that one piece -- that triumphal chorus I mentioned earlier for  YuuYuu Hakusho, the piece I call "Dragon Shiryu Awakened" in Saint Seiya, etc.

But this should be for a show that had an entire soundtrack that was just perfect, or as close to perfect as anything can be. This immediately puts one in mind of Yoko Kanno, a compositional chameleon who MASTERS her forms; while I'm not a fan of her work on Cowboy Bebop I'm assured it's very good for what it is, and her work on Macross Plus (especially "Information High") and most especially on The Vision of Escaflowne is just amazing. There are also the soundtracks for Miyazaki's movies Tonari no Totoro and Laputa, which are absolutely beautiful and perfect for their setting. A part of me is also tempted to nominate Michael Giacchino's  kick-ass soundtrack for Speed Racer.... but unfortunately that's for the live-action movie (although the latter is the most letter-perfect translation of anime to screen I've ever seen).

In the end, however, I can make no choice other than the absolutely awe-inspiring soundtrack composed by Masamichi Amano for the magnificent and unparalleled Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still. This orchestral masterpiece combines original music with selected themes from classical compositions to give a tremendous depth and power to the anime that must be heard to be understood.
