Bringing you Sunday's post today! :)
The classic Five-Team dynamic is present in a lot of shows, but for me it's most strongly a part of the sentai and, in anime, powered/god-warrior shows. This includes Saint Seiya, which I've mentioned more than once, Sailor Moon, and Scientific Ninja Force Gatchaman (AKA Battle of the Planets or G-Force here).
But for me the best of the Five-Teams, and the best God-Warrior show, remains Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (AKA Ronin Warriors here in the USA). Alas, I can give you no link because the out-of-print DVDs are HIDEOUSLY expensive -- the two-season boxed set runs $400!
YST followed Saint Seiya onto the screen, but it, like many other shows or products that follow the initial big success, had learned something from the mistakes as well as the successes of its predecessor. Where the Saints existed mostly in isolation from the world and rarely were given chances to show themselves as "regular people", the Five Troopers were clearly normal high-school level teens who, at the same time, weren't just shoved into the roles. They weren't sufficiently trained, no, but that was a deliberate choice by their Xanatos-like mentor Kaos. They had as an advisor Nasti Yaiguchi, a young woman whose father had been researching the mythology behind the Troopers and their adversary, Arago-Sama, and along the way picked up a young boy sidekick named Jun, whose parents disappeared/were killed in the first assault by Arago.
Nicely done areas of YST included the core music (a few pieces of which have been stolen and re-used by multiple other shows) and OPs. The secondary character interaction was excellent: Nasti is actually vital to their operations in more than one way -- including being their sole transportation on occasion. SHE has a van, and a license to drive, and none of the Troopers do; Jun plays key roles in various episodes without becoming either just a hostage or an annoying whiner; the opposing bad guys are developed as characters and their personalities play vital roles in their actions and in the later events. The background of the show itself is important, as it makes use of ancient Japanese mythology in unusual but interesting ways (Kaos is apparently a Shugendo monk, a magician from a sect which combined Shinto, Buddhist, and other teachings). The way in which our heroes learn their powers is reasonable, and the first season ends with a surprise ... which becomes the main driver for the action in the SECOND season.
