1. Do you have a favorite piece of your own writing; and if you do, why and does it change?
I suppose that depends on what one means by "piece of writing" -- scenes, or complete stories. Scenes I have a LOT of favorites and it would be very hard to pick just one. For entire stories... of the published or to-be-published stuff, Phoenix Rising would be my favorite, I think, though it's a close contest between that and Grand Central Arena.
It does change over time because I'm getting more chances to write and publish stories and (I like to think) they're gettting overall better with time. Some SCENES remain favorites -- for instance, I still love the scene in Digital Knight which ends "... Verne Domingo had come calling."
Heck, there's still some scenes from my fanfic that I think are really good.
2. How do you feel about the aspects of writing that are not putting/editing words on the page?
Depends on WHICH aspects. Hard SF sometimes is a pain in the butt because I have to do lots of research on some topic which, by itself, may not interest me that much but that's vital to the story, and I know SOMEONE will be reading it and telling me where I am going badly wrong. I don't MIND being wrong, but I want to know ahead of time WHEN I'm ignoring the laws of physics, and that takes work. Other stuff, like working out the world for GCA, is mostly fun, because I don't have to worry about some twit telling me that the Arena doesn't really work that way.
3. What is the significance of your username and your default icon? I've always wondered about both.
Back in the Ancient Days of the Internet -- 1977 -- I was one of the best programmer/hackers on the local network I was a part of. At the time I had a number of handles but they were all story-derived, as were most other people's. I wanted a new handle, one that would denote the concept that I didn't generally attack people, but it was a terrible idea to actually BOTHER me because it would end badly for you.
Eventually, I chose the name "Sea Wasp", the common name of the cubomedusa or box jellyfish Chironex Fleckeri. The main icon is a picture of that particular creature, taken from one of the color plates in the magnificent 3-volume work Poisonous and Venomous Marine Animals by Bruce Halstead.
4. Has there been a writing project that you wanted to finish but for some reason had to trunk? What happened? Will you come back to it?
Several, actually. One of them I picked up some time later and the first part of it is coming out this year as Phoenix Rising. Another, Demons of the Past, I've written and rewritten something like five times. I've finally written the first two of three volumes of Demons and I hope to find a publisher for it so I can justify working on the third and last.
I started work on a book set fairly far in the future of the Jason Wood universe, but realized I couldn't really write it unless and until I finished certain other stories, so that one will probably stay untouched until all those stories are finished or nearly finished.
5. How goes the Podcast adventure?
Haven't finished one. I'm still trying to figure out how to actually record and edit the sound properly so that it will sound good, and then I have to figure out how to package and send it out, so to speak.
